The project - waste water
Ice Pigging was selected because of its speed and simplicity to clean 650m of a 150mm stainless steel pipe that was unable to keep up with required flows. Due to the difficulty with removing built up grease, the project required an onsite ice conditioning unit, allowing for a very thick ice slurry to be produced directly into the pipe. This type of ice slurry with very low liquid content generates a much higher wall shear than the type used in standard applications and the results were excellent. A large amount of grease and dirt laden ice was seen at the outlet and after the operation the pipe was able to keep up with the required rate.
The customer was experiencing decreased flow rates in an oil waste pipe due to a build up of grease and sediment. The pipe geometry was also very complex and for the 40 years that the pipe was in service, it had not once been cleaned.
