We were contracted to carry out Ice Pigging on approximately 400km of water mains each year for the following five years.
Yarra Valley Water’s supply network carries high levels of natural sediment that accumulates in the pipeline, this in turn causes a high number of customer complaints. The supply networks which result in these customer complaints were typically cleaned via water flushing. However, following on from water restrictions the cleaning program had to be suspended due to the very high volumes of water used during flushing operations.
After a period of research to find a more efficient cleaning method, they came across Ice Pigging and trials began soon after. During these trials Yarra Valley Water found that Ice Pigging removed up to 17 times more sediment from the mains compared to that of water flushing, whilst using half the amount of water.
Not only that but when using a ‘$ per kg of sediment removed’ as a cost indicator, Ice Pigging proved to be significantly cheaper at $470 per kg of sediment removed compared to water flushing which costs around $2,655/kg – quite a difference!
Yarra Valley Water came to the conclusion that as Ice Pigging achieved a much more superior clean, there would be a significant decrease in the number of dirty water complaints which would lead to further cost savings as there would be a reduction of any unscheduled flushing jobs and an overall decrease in the frequency of mains cleaning.
